Why does Bone Density Matter for Women?
As we age, maintaining muscle mass becomes essential—not just for strength, but for supporting bone density and keeping metabolism active.
According to the NIH, “Women lose about 50% of their trabecular bone and 30% of their cortical bone during the course of their lifetime, about half of which is lost during the first 10 years after menopause.” The article explains, “It is important to determine when bone loss accelerates so that women and their health care providers can make informed decisions regarding the appropriate time to screen for osteoporosis and to consider therapy to prevent bone loss.”
With stronger bone density, we can reduce the chance of fractures, and improve our physical performance and overall health. Which is why protein is so important for women. Not only to strengthen our bone density but it also helps build lean muscle, improve recovery, and sustain energy levels. It also plays a vital role in hormone balance and immune function, making it a key nutrient for overall wellness.
Protein plays an important role in maintaining bone health, especially when calcium intake is adequate. It helps preserve muscle mass, which in turn supports bone strength and reduces the risk of fractures. Protein may also enhance calcium absorption and increase levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), a hormone that promotes bone growth. This highlights protein as a key nutrient for supporting bone density—particularly as we age.
Even though age is just a number, right? 💪🏼

How does Protein Support Muscle Mass for Women?
According to the NPR, “Muscle mass peaks in our 30s and then starts a long, slow decline. As a country, we are under-muscled," says Richard Joseph, a wellness-focused physician. The good news: No matter your age, you can take steps to maximize your strength. Resistance training is key, but equally important, is eating adequate amounts of protein.” If you do not consume the right amount of protein, you are missing half the equation.
