A Natural Immune Booster for the Whole Family
As parents, we’re always on the lookout for ways to keep our families healthy, especially when it comes to boosting immunity and supporting gut health. In fact, this is the reason we started WonderCow over two years ago. When our first daughter was born, she dealt with constant ear infections in her first year of life. With each infection, the doctor prescribed antibiotics. These helped her infections, but ultimately destroyed her gut and compromised her immune system.
As dairy farmers, we knew firsthand the power of colostrum and its impact on baby calves.
So we decided to give it a try. Over time, we began to see real results and the impact that the colostrum had on her overall health and immunity. We were so excited that we started sharing with friends and family members and eventually decided to start a brand so we could share it with the world!
What Exactly is Bovine Colostrum?
Bovine colostrum is the first milk produced by cows after giving birth. It’s not your average dairy milk: Colostrum is a nutrient-dense, golden liquid that’s packed with everything a newborn calf needs to build a strong immune system and a healthy gut in its very first days of life. Did you know that when calves are born, their immune systems actually are not fully developed - and colostrum is what develops it?? (Now you know!)
Here’s the cool part:
The same nutrients that support a baby calf also have been proven to benefit humans.
How is Bovine Colostrum Different from Human Colostrum?
For starters, cows produce almost 100x more colostrum than humans in the first 24 hours, meaning there is plenty of excess for collecting for supplement use. When it comes to immunoglobulins, human colostrum consists primarily immunoglobulin A (IgA).
Bovine colostrum contains a multitude of immunoglobulins including IgA, IgG, IgE, IgD and many more.
Bovine colostrum also contains 40 times more antibodies than human colostrum! Since antibodies and immunoglobulins are both effective when it comes to immune support... that's enough to indicate how valuable bovine colostrum is.
Why Parents Are Talking About Colostrum
Whether your child is constantly catching every cold at school or you’re looking for a way to support gut health, bovine colostrum has some compelling benefits:
- Immune Support: Colostrum is loaded with antibodies and immune factors that help fight off viruses and bacteria. Many parents give it to kids (and take it themselves!) during cold and flu season.
- Gut Health: It helps strengthen the gut lining and feed healthy bacteria in your gut, which is great for kids with sensitive stomachs, food intolerances, or digestive issues.
- Natural and Gentle: Colostrum is a food-based supplement, which makes it appealing for parents who prefer a natural approach to wellness.
Different Forms of Colostrum Supplements
Bovine colostrum is typically available as a powder, although there are a few other forms starting to hit the market. You can mix the powder into smoothies, yogurt, or even applesauce, which makes it super easy to sneak into your kids’ diet without a complaint.
It has become a popular supplement for breastfeeding moms and active dads who are looking to support muscle recovery and energy levels. Whole, bovine colostrum is truly wonderful for the whole family!
How to know the Quality of Your Colostrum
Make sure your powder is whole and has a goldish hue to it. This ensures that it contains all of colostrum's powerful components, but mainly the Milk Fat Globular Membranes & phospholipids. These help protect the bioactive molecules through digestion and into the gut where they can maximize their benefits.
*Be careful with other forms of colostrum like chews and shelf stable liquids, as the benefits are most often destroyed in order to get the colostrum in these forms.
Final Thoughts
As parents, we know that keeping our kids healthy can sometimes feel like a full-time job. Bovine colostrum isn’t a miracle cure, but it’s a natural way to support the body’s immune and digestive systems, from toddlers to teens, and even for mom and dad.
So if you're looking for a tool to help keep your family healthy this year, bovine colostrum may be worth giving a try!
