The Wonder Of Cows
Did you know: Cows have four chambers in their stomach! Each part is able to use everything possible from their food and drink, providing them with the most nutrients and hydration available.
Rumen: The rumen can hold 25+ gallons of food and drink — a human stomach can hold up to one gallon — and acts like a giant fermentation vat. It’s home to many microbes that start to break down and pull nutrients from food before moving on to the next chamber.
Omasum: This chamber of many folds, or “many piles,” has an incredible amount of surface area to fully absorb nutrients not yet absorbed in the rumen. This is also where water gets absorbed.
Abomasum: The abomasum is the cow’s “true stomach” where hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes to break down proteins and fats.
